As privacy restrictions limit user-level tracking and retail media demands greater accountability, marketers need methods that prove spending drove results that would not have happened otherwise. Incrementality testing uses controlled experiments to isolate the causal effect of advertising. The core design splits an audience or market into two groups: a treatment group exposed to the ad and a control (holdout) group that is not. The difference in outcomes represents incremental lift.

Albertsons Media Collective launched an in-store incrementality framework in early 2026. A Mondelēz test campaign delivered $2.41 matched-market incremental ROAS and 14% lift in in-store sales across 116 locations, per EMARKETER, isolating causal lift by comparing matched markets.

This indicates demand for AI that explains results rather than just processing data.
AI is also lowering barriers to entry. Google reduced the minimum budget for incrementality experiments from approximately $100,000 to $5,000 by adopting Bayesian statistical models that prioritize probability over certainty, per Search Engine Land. This makes controlled experiments accessible to mid-market brands that previously could not afford rigorous testing.
