The news: OpenAI acquired tech industry talk show TBPN—a marketing move aimed at directing the conversation around AI, per The Wall Street Journal. It’s the AI giant’s first purchase of a media company. Financial details weren’t disclosed.
OpenAI CEO of applications Fidji Simo praised TBPN’s comms and marketing instincts in a memo. She noted how they’ve helped brands market online and said the mission of creating AGI comes with a responsibility to create a space for “constructive conversation” about AI’s effects, per CNBC.
Zooming out: This move in some ways goes against Simo’s recent comments that OpenAI needs to scale back on “side quests” and focus on business and productivity tools in the face of rising competition from platforms like Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.
Boosting conversation around AI may not seem necessary considering OpenAI’s outsize presence in the industry. However, owning a media platform gives OpenAI strategic storytelling and closer proximity to the AI narrative. That could be vital considering only 5% of US adults trust AI “a lot,” per YouGov.
The TBPN deal also builds on similar purchases by other tech companies: Plaid bought newsletter business This Week in Fintech in late March, and HubSpot acquired media brand Starter Story in February.
Why it matters: Although OpenAI said TBPN will maintain editorial independence, the deal still puts the former closer to the production and framing of industry conversations, especially given TBPN’s roster of high-profile guests. That’s important as AI vendors compete on enterprise buyers’ perception, trust, and mindshare—on top of product performance.
Implications for the industry: Always-on content ecosystems and high-authority platforms may become as important as products themselves in fast-moving categories like AI, especially in earning consumer trust and elevating the names of growing companies.
